Joplin's Story Project is a community-made platform dedicated to pulling travelers off Route 66 and into the real, living history of one of Missouri's most fascinating cities.
Joplin has been at the crossroads of American history for over 150 years. Outlaws hid here. Aviators launched careers here. A master painter created his final signed work here. Mining magnates built mansions here that are still standing. And most people driving through on Interstate 44 never slow down long enough to know any of it.
That's the problem Joplin's Story Project was built to solve.
We built this website to be the front door — a simple, beautiful, mobile-first platform that gives travelers a reason to pull over and gives locals a reason to look at their city with fresh eyes. Six stories. One map. Endless history.

Joplin's Story Project was created as a class project by the Leadership Joplin Class of 2026 — a cohort of community-minded professionals selected to develop their leadership skills through hands-on engagement with the Joplin community.
Leadership Joplin is a flagship program of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, now in its 43rd year with more than 1,139 graduates. The program challenges participants to go beyond their professional roles, engage with the full scope of the community, and produce work that reflects their investment in Joplin's future.
This website is that investment.
The Class of 2026 chose to tell Joplin's history because they believe the city's story is worth telling — to every traveler on Route 66, to every new resident still learning the city, and to every longtime Joplin resident who deserves to see their home recognized for everything it is.

Joplin's Story Project is a program of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce — the organization that has served as the backbone of Joplin's business and civic community for decades.
The Chamber's mission is to connect, strengthen, and grow the Joplin region — and Joplin's Story Project reflects exactly that. By presenting this platform to travelers and residents alike, the Chamber is investing in Joplin's identity, its tourism, and its future.
The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce will serve as the permanent steward of this website and its stories.
If you're reading this page after scanning the QR code on our downtown monument sign — welcome. You are exactly the person this project was built for.
That sign is the physical entry point to Joplin's Story Project. It stands downtown as a permanent marker of this community effort, and it sends every traveler who stops to scan it here — to the stories, the map, and the full history of this city.
Physical Experience sponsors are permanently recognized on the monument sign plaque. Their investment made this possible.

The whole reason we built this project was so that travelers like you would stop, look around, and discover what Joplin really has to offer. Open the map. Pick a story. Start wherever feels right.
